Mother and Son Reunite in Louisiana After 20 Years Apart

A mother's prayers for reunion were finally answered when her son surprised her at a birthday party in Alexandria, Louisiana, ending a 20-year separation that split their family across two continents.

Twenty years ago, Nerry Aspuria made an impossible choice. She sent her son Ian to live with his father in the United States while she stayed behind in the Philippines to help raise her other children.

The distance weighed heavily on everyone. Nerry prayed daily for the day they could be together again, holding onto hope even as the years stretched on.

"As I grew older, I realized that there was a missing piece of our family," said Annette Mendoza, Nerry's daughter. "And that was having my mother and my brother reunite again."

A few years ago, the first piece fell into place when Nerry was able to migrate to the United States. Her children saw their chance to finally bring the family back together.

Annette and Ian began planning the surprise reunion, choosing their mother's 60th birthday as the perfect moment. Ian flew in from Florida, his nerves building as the party approached.

When Nerry walked into her birthday celebration, Ian was waiting. The emotions of two decades poured out in an instant.

"Very blessed. Very thankful to have a sister like her to make everything happen," Ian said. "I was very nervous at the time, but it was just a lot of emotions. Very grateful."
