Mother Found After 25 Years Reunites With Her Children

After a quarter century apart, Sukhdei stood face to face with her grown children at an ashram in Bharatpur, India, in a reunion no one thought possible.

Sukhdei disappeared from her home in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh 25 years ago while experiencing mental distress. Her daughters were just seven and 10 years old at the time, and her son Rohit was only two and a half.

Her husband Bachan spent years searching for her but found no trace. He raised their three children alone, saw both daughters married, and passed away in 2022 still wondering what happened to his wife.

Hope arrived from an unexpected place last September. The team at Apna Ghar Ashram found Sukhdei in Jodhpur and brought her to their facility in Bharatpur for treatment and care.

With continuous medical attention and support, her mental condition gradually improved. Over months of rehabilitation, memories began surfacing about her village and family.

Dr. B.M. Bhardwaj, the ashram's founder, explains that once Sukhdei recalled details about Akampur village in Unnao district, his team worked to locate her relatives. They successfully contacted her family and arranged the reunion.

When her daughter Somvati, son Rohit, son-in-law Dhanpal, and a village representative arrived at the ashram on Friday, no one recognized each other at first. Twenty-five years had transformed everyone.

Once the ashram staff made introductions, the barriers dissolved. Tears flowed as the daughters embraced their mother for the first time since childhood.

The reunion carries bittersweet moments for Sukhdei, who missed her daughters' weddings and all the milestones mothers dream of sharing. "I was not aware of what was happening," she said, adding that despite feeling incomplete, she finds happiness seeing her family safe and settled.

Rohit, now a mason, grew up without memories of his mother. His sisters built their own families without her guidance.

The ashram's patient, methodical approach to rehabilitation made this miracle possible. Their commitment to not just treating Sukhdei but restoring her identity and reconnecting her with loved ones turned what could have been a tragic story into one of hope.

A family shattered by loss has found wholeness again, proving that even after 25 years, it's never too late to come home.
