Mount Maunganui Recovery Complete, All Families Reunited

Every family waiting for a loved one is now whole again after rescue teams completed their recovery mission at Mount Maunganui's devastating landslide site.

Police announced Sunday that all recovery operations have officially ended following the January 22 landslide that swept through the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park. Six people lost their lives in the tragedy, and emergency workers spent 11 days carefully recovering each person to return them to their families.

Bay of Plenty District Commander Tim Anderson expressed relief that every family has been reunited with their loved ones. "The last 11 days have been extremely difficult for them, waiting for their loved ones to be found and returned to them," he said.

The scene will be formally handed over to Tauranga City Council in the coming days. Monitoring technology remains in place to track any future land movements, while police will support the upcoming Coronial inquest.
