Volunteer hands crocheting soft cotton breast prosthesis for cancer survivors in Mumbai workshop

🦸 Hero Alert

After breast cancer surgery, many women stuff handkerchiefs in their bras because they can't afford silicone prostheses. Jayashree Ratan's volunteer network has now crocheted 5,700 comfortable alternatives and given them away for free.

After a mastectomy, many breast cancer survivors face an uncomfortable choice: buy expensive silicone prostheses they can't afford, or stuff handkerchiefs and cotton balls into their bras. The makeshift solution often causes painful rashes and infections.

Chennai-born Jayashree Ratan knew there had to be a better way. She started learning to crochet soft, comfortable breast prostheses that women could actually afford because they'd be completely free.

In 2018, she founded Saaisha India in Mumbai with a simple mission: create dignified, comfortable options for women recovering from breast cancer surgery. The timing couldn't be more critical since a woman in India is diagnosed with breast cancer every four minutes.

Each crocheted prosthesis is made from 100 percent mercerised cotton yarn that's soft on sensitive skin and doesn't trigger allergies. The prostheses fit into mastectomy bras, come in different cup sizes, and last about two years. Best of all, they're hand washable and breathable.

What started as one woman with a crochet hook has grown into a movement of 270 volunteers spanning India, the UAE, and the United States. Together, they've distributed more than 5,700 free prostheses to survivors who need them.

The volunteer network spends just a few hours creating each prosthesis, but the impact lasts years. Women no longer have to choose between comfort and confidence during an already difficult recovery period.

The Ripple Effect

Saaisha India's work extends far beyond the physical product. By creating a volunteer network across three countries, Jayashree has built a community of people connected by compassion and craft.

The organization removes a financial barrier that shouldn't exist in the first place. When commercial prostheses can cost hundreds of dollars, a free crocheted alternative means survivors can redirect limited resources toward treatment, medicine, or simply rebuilding their lives.

Each prosthesis represents hours of volunteer labor motivated by one belief: women deserve comfort and dignity after trauma, not more pain. The soft cotton alternative prevents the skin infections and abrasions that handkerchief stuffing causes, letting bodies heal properly.

"We never knew we would touch so many lives by spending just a few hours on each product," Jayashree says. "That is our biggest reward."

For 5,700 women so far, that reward is walking through the world feeling whole again.
