Elevated highway flyover with multiple lanes connecting Mumbai suburbs above city traffic

Mumbai's New 1.2km Flyover Opens, Slashing Commute Times

😊 Feel Good

Mumbai is about to cut travel time across the city with a brand new elevated flyover connecting its western and eastern suburbs for the first time. The 1.2 kilometer bridge opens this month as the first piece of a game-changing transportation project.

Millions of Mumbai commuters are about to get their time back thanks to a gleaming new flyover that connects two sides of India's busiest city.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is opening a 1.2 kilometer elevated bridge later this month that links Dindoshi in the western suburbs directly to Film City near Sanjay Gandhi National Park. For the first time, drivers won't need to battle through congested surface streets to cross the city.

The six-lane flyover is the first completed section of the ambitious Goregaon Mulund Link Road, a 12.2 kilometer corridor that will eventually connect Goregaon in the west to Mulund in the east through underground tunnels, bridges, and modern interchanges. Right now, no direct east-west route exists in Mumbai, forcing commuters into hours of gridlock.

Construction crews have finished building the flyover and are now adding the finishing touches like road paint, traffic signals, and safety features. The bridge includes an elevated rotary intersection and sidewalks on both sides, making it accessible for pedestrians too.

The immediate impact will be felt on the Western Express Highway, one of Mumbai's most congested corridors. Traffic that currently clogs the Goregaon-Dindoshi areas during rush hour will have a new path forward, easing pressure on surrounding neighborhoods.

The Ripple Effect

This flyover is just the beginning of a transportation revolution for Mumbai's 20 million residents. By 2027, twin tunnels will open to connect directly with this bridge, further cutting travel times across the city.

The entire Goregaon Mulund Link Road project costs 14,000 crore rupees (about $1.7 billion) and is scheduled for completion by 2028. When finished alongside the separate Coastal Road project, the city's suburban belt will transform from a traffic nightmare into an efficiently connected network.

"By 2028, commuting through the suburban belt will become very easy, and this flyover is just the first step towards it," said Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner for Projects. The bridge itself represents a 300 crore rupee investment in smoother daily life for millions.

For a city where two-hour commutes are normal, getting people home to their families faster means more time for what really matters.
