Muncie Theater Celebrates Kindness with Charlie Musical

In a world that often feels cynical, Muncie Civic Theatre is opening its season with a story that proves goodness still wins.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" kicked off performances on August 7, launching the theater's "Creative Wonder Awaits" season. While audiences expect imagination and magic from Roald Dahl's beloved tale, the creative team says the real power lies in Charlie Bucket's compassion and curiosity.

"Kindness rules the day," said director Brittany Covert. "But in this story, it's kindness plus creativity."

Covert explained that Charlie's sense of wonder sets him apart from the other children touring Willy Wonka's factory. While the other kids focus only on chocolate, Charlie marvels at every exploding bonbon, light-up lollipop, and spinning gear.

"The other children can't even see the wonder when they're in Wonka's factory," Covert said. "But Charlie is just amazed at every single cog and crank."

Ball State senior Clay Coblentz plays Willy Wonka in the production. He said the relationship between Wonka and Charlie drives the musical's emotional heart.

"Wonka sees a little bit of himself in Charlie," Coblentz said. "Seeing that childlike innocence helps him rediscover something he's lost, and that's a belief in people."

Why This Inspires

Charlie's outlook offers lessons that reach far beyond the stage. His character doesn't chase fame or popularity but simply enjoys being present in each moment.

"That's something I wish I could instill in all children, and honestly, every adult," Covert said. "Be willing to try things and fail. You're supposed to have fun trying something new."

Coblentz said imagination remains the show's strongest gift to audiences. "It's really good to have whimsy," he said. "It helps you find new things in the old."

The production itself reflects the power of community creativity. Actors, artists, craftspeople, musicians, and dancers from across Muncie came together to bring the story to life.

"When you bring together people from all corners of our community, it almost feels limitless," Covert said.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" runs through August 23 at Muncie Civic Theatre, inviting audiences to rediscover the magic of curiosity and kindness.
