Munster Honors Queensland Legends in Origin Decider Quest

Cameron Munster is carrying the torch passed to him by Queensland rugby league legends as he leads the Maroons into Wednesday night's State of Origin series decider in Brisbane.

The 31-year-old captain wants to honor the greats who shaped his career. Johnathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk, Cameron Smith and Billy Slater didn't just play alongside Munster when he started out in 2017, they poured everything into mentoring the next generation.

"They've been great for the game, pouring their blood out for the Maroon jersey," Munster said. "They instilled the belief and confidence in us that we can go out there and be like them."

Munster remembers his 2017 debut vividly. Thurston took him under his wing at camp, building his confidence before he stepped onto the field wearing the famous maroon jersey for the first time.

Now those same legends are still in his corner. Billy Slater coaches the team, and the words of encouragement from all four mentors keep pushing Munster forward.

"When you have guys like that telling you how good you can be and how good we are if we get it all right, it just makes you want to run through a brick wall," he said.

Why This Inspires

Munster's journey shows how greatness gets passed down through generations. The champions who dominated Origin football didn't just win games, they invested in the players who would carry the jersey after them.

That mentorship created a winner. Munster has claimed four of the five Origin series he's contested since 2020, missing only the 2024 series due to injury.

But Wednesday night offers something special he hasn't achieved yet. He's never captained the Maroons to victory in a series decider at home in Brisbane.

"It will probably top everything, to be fair," Munster said. "To have the 'C' next to my name for the first time at home, especially in a decider, it's something you dream about as a kid."

The legends taught him well, and now Munster gets his chance to add his own chapter to Queensland's storied Origin history.
