Muskogee Volunteers Pack 60,000 Meals to Fight Hunger
When organizers asked for help fighting hunger in Muskogee, 273 volunteers showed up ready to make a difference. Together, they packed 60,000 meals for local families in need.
When organizers in Muskogee, Oklahoma put out a call for volunteers to pack meals for hungry neighbors, they hoped for a good turnout. What they got was a line of people waiting to help.
The Against Global Hunger event at the Muskogee Civic Center drew 273 volunteers, hitting the organizers' target and then some. Organizer Letitia Williams watched in amazement as community members kept arriving throughout the day.
"We were proud and excited to see that happen," Williams said. At peak times, volunteers actually had to wait in line for their turn to help pack meals.
By the time the event wrapped up, those 273 pairs of hands had assembled 60,000 complete meals. The food went straight to local organizations serving people facing hunger, including the Gospel Rescue Mission, which received 12 boxes containing about 20 servings each.
Rich Schaus from the Gospel Rescue Mission said the meals offer more than just calories. "This is really healthy food, it's good for them, it's going to help their physical health and mental health," he explained.

The Ripple Effect
The 60,000 meals fell short of the original stretch goal, but Williams sees it differently. "That's just now a goal for the future because we've seen what this community can do," she said.
Each meal represents a person who won't go to bed hungry, a child who can focus at school, or a parent with one less worry. When healthy food reaches people who need it most, the benefits extend far beyond a full stomach.
The success of this event builds on a March gathering where the community first came together around the same cause. That momentum is growing, and organizers are already planning future events.
The volunteers came from all walks of life, united by a simple desire to help their neighbors. Their combined effort proved what becomes possible when a community decides no one should go hungry.
Williams and her team are already looking ahead to the next event, inspired by what they witnessed.
