Mystery ATV Driver Plows Sidewalks, Buys Donuts for Firefighters

Imagine shoveling snow for the seventh time in one day, only to have a stranger show up and finish the job for you.

That's exactly what happened to firefighters at Station 51 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, during a recent winter storm. Firefighter Robert Flynn and his crew had been clearing snow all day Sunday, tackling the driveway and long stretches of sidewalk along 6th Avenue and South Main Street.

Their snow blower was broken, so the firefighters were hand shoveling to keep walkways safe for residents. City crews and neighboring first responders helped with the driveway, but the sidewalks were another story.

On his last trek outside, Flynn heard the rumble of a motor and the scrape of a plow blade. A young man on a quad ATV had appeared and started clearing the sidewalk.

"He went down the block, turned around, and came back and started plowing for us," Flynn said. The stranger saved the crew from hundreds of feet of back breaking shovel work.

When the firefighters tried to pay him for his help, he reluctantly accepted a few dollars. But he didn't keep the money for himself.

The mystery driver returned shortly after with boxes of munchkins for the entire crew. He hadn't wanted payment at all, just the chance to help.

This story captures something special about small town kindness. The young man didn't announce his arrival or ask for recognition. He simply saw people who needed help and acted.

Flynn says the gesture is typical of Carbondale residents. "That's indicative of the people of Carbondale. They're awesome for us," he said.

The department has put out an invitation for the mystery helper to stop by so they can properly thank him. For now, they're grateful that someone made a brutal storm day a little less bitter.
