Mystery Dog Leads Kentucky Police to Missing 3-Year-Old

A mysterious dog became an unlikely hero when it led a Louisville police officer directly to a missing toddler who had been trapped inside a car.

On January 7th, the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department deployed helicopters, drones, and multiple officers to search for a missing 3-year-old boy. Officer Josh Thompson, a self-described "dog guy," was canvassing the neighborhood near the child's home when something extraordinary happened.

A dog appeared at his side and started walking with him. At first, Thompson was cautious. The barking, unfamiliar dog jerked at him as he knocked on doors.

Then Thompson trusted his instincts. He looked at the dog and said, "let's go find this kid."

The dog immediately spun around and trotted back toward the house, barking periodically. Thompson followed, captured on his body camera. The officer later said the dog seemed to be telling him to "hurry up."

The dog led Thompson and Officer Story to the back of the house. It ran straight to a parked car and sat down next to the back wheel.

Inside, they found the missing boy locked in the vehicle with the child locks engaged. Officers had to coach the frightened toddler on how to open the door from inside.

When the door finally opened, the child jumped out and bear-hugged Thompson's neck. "I don't think I've ever seen a happier kid in my life," Thompson said in the department's video.
