Mystery Golden Orb From Alaska Deep Sea Finally Identified

A shimmering golden sphere found on the ocean floor two miles deep has captivated scientists for over a year, and they've finally cracked the case.

In 2023, researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration spotted something unusual while exploring the Gulf of Alaska with a remotely operated underwater vehicle. A strange golden orb with a hole in it sat mysteriously attached to a rock in the deep darkness.

The research team sent the orb to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History for analysis. They discovered it wasn't an animal itself but a fibrous material covered with specialized stinging cells called spirocysts, which only exist in cnidarians like jellyfish, anemones, and corals.

The breakthrough came when scientists compared it to a similar specimen collected in 2021. Whole genome sequencing revealed both were genetically almost identical to Relicanthus daphneae, a species of giant sea anemone.

The golden object that caught everyone's attention is actually the base of the anemone, a part normally hidden underneath the creature's body. Somehow this one got left behind, though scientists still don't know whether the rest of the anemone died or moved to a new location.

The full living anemone is impressive in scale. Its pink cylindrical body can grow up to three feet across, with tentacles stretching six feet long and the largest stinging cells among all known cnidarians.
