Mysuru Honors Street Cleaners in Republic Day Parade

Street cleaners stepped into the spotlight at Mysuru's 77th Republic Day celebration, marching proudly alongside police, fire services, and military units in the city's official parade.

The civic workers, known locally as pourakarmikas, formed one of 24 contingents at the Torch Light Parade Ground on January 26. They walked in formation with contingents from emergency services, National Cadet Corps, and Home Guards, celebrating their critical work keeping the city clean.

The symbolic recognition comes as Mysuru sets an ambitious target to become India's first 7-star garbage-free city under the national Swachh Survekshan rating system. District Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, who hoisted the national flag at the event, called on all citizens to help achieve the goal through household waste sorting and reducing single-use plastics.

"I request the cooperation of all citizens to achieve this goal through 100% waste segregation at the household level," Mahadevappa said during the ceremony. The plan includes scientific waste management and active participation from schools, markets, offices, and institutions across the city.

Students from four local schools performed patriotic dances celebrating Indian unity and independence during the cultural program. The performances included themes of diversity, self-reliance, and national pride.
