Namibia Opens Science Hub to Empower Youth in Katutura

A new science center in Katutura, Namibia, is opening doors that have been closed to young people for far too long.

Last week, the City of Windhoek signed an agreement with the National Commission on Research, Science and Technology to transform a community complex into a cutting-edge learning hub. The center will serve the neighborhoods of Katutura and Khomasdal, areas that have faced significant educational inequality.

Mayor Sakarias Uunona painted a powerful picture of what's coming. He envisions schoolchildren experimenting with sustainable farming techniques designed for arid climates, directly tackling food insecurity in informal settlements. Young entrepreneurs will prototype solar-powered irrigation systems and AI-driven waste management tools, turning ideas into real jobs.

The facility will offer hands-on workshops, STEM programs, and maker spaces open to everyone. For Windhoek's 400,000 residents, many of whom struggle with limited access to quality education, this represents a major shift.

The city is investing in renovating the UN Plaza restaurant building over a five-year lease agreement. The space will become a gathering place where students, entrepreneurs, innovators and educators can collaborate on solutions to local challenges.

City CEO Moses Matyayi emphasized that residents will finally access innovative educational tools that were previously out of reach. The center aims to equip young people with skills to contribute to Namibia's technological growth.

The Ripple Effect

This single science center could spark changes far beyond Katutura's borders. NCRST CEO Anicia Peters explained that the collaboration aligns with Namibia's Vision 2030 and sixth National Development Plan, both focused on research, innovation, and inclusive economic growth.

The partnership creates a platform bringing together government, academia, industry and communities to co-create solutions together. It proves that science and technology don't have to stay confined to institutions or policy documents.
