Nantucket Tests Antibody Mice to Fight Lyme Disease

Nantucket has a problem most vacation spots don't face: Lyme disease affects roughly 15% of its residents, one of the highest rates in the country.

Now, researchers from MIT are testing an innovative solution called Mice Against Ticks. The project uses specially bred mice that carry protective antibodies from birth, making them unable to pass Lyme bacteria to ticks.

Here's how it works: People get Lyme disease from infected ticks, but ticks become infected by feeding on white-footed mice that carry the bacteria. If the mice can't spread the disease, the number of infected ticks should drop over time.

"The natural disaster in our area is not hurricanes, or tornadoes, or earthquakes; it is Lyme disease," MIT researcher Kevin Esvelt told CBS News. For an island known for beautiful beaches and historic charm, the invisible threat lurking in brushy areas has overshadowed outdoor recreation for too long.

Nantucket sits about 30 miles off Cape Cod's coast, drawing summer visitors to explore its trails, conservation land, and natural beauty. But health officials constantly remind residents and tourists to use insect repellent, avoid brushy areas, and check for ticks regularly.
