Naomi Osaka's Jellyfish Dress Inspired by Toddler Daughter

When your toddler loves jellyfish, sometimes you wear one to work at the Australian Open.

Naomi Osaka turned heads Tuesday with one of the most creative entrances in tennis history, walking onto Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne wearing a flowing blue-green dress inspired by her daughter Shai's obsession with jellyfish. The four-time Grand Slam champion completed the look with a butterfly-adorned wide-brim hat, veil, and white parasol.

The outfit was months in the planning, and Osaka knew the risks of such a bold entrance. "When I was playing today, I just told myself, 'Keep your head on the path. If she beats you, then that's unfortunate. But, hey, at least you're trending,'" she joked after her 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Antonia Ruzic.

The jellyfish theme came directly from Shai's current fascination with the sea creatures. The butterflies on her accessories referenced a magical moment from Osaka's 2021 Australian Open championship run, when a butterfly landed on her during a third-round match.

Osaka, who grew up idolizing the style of Venus and Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, sees fashion as part of her tennis identity. "I think it all comes down to personality, too," she explained.

The timing couldn't have been better. When Osaka arrived in Melbourne, she discovered the remodeled player tunnel featured Australian coastal themes with ocean waves and beach imagery. "Honestly it came together quite beautifully because I didn't know what to expect when I arrived here," she said. "Then it just felt like everywhere I looked the theme was water. I thought that it was really beautiful. Really amazing coincidence."

Why This Inspires

Osaka's confidence to express herself so boldly comes from hard-won experience. After reaching the US Open semifinals last year for her first Grand Slam semifinal in four years, the 27-year-old mother is rediscovering her joy on court while balancing parenthood with professional tennis.

Fashion experts loved the theatricality. The Australian Open's fashion editor-at-large called it "completely unhinged" in the best way, noting "I love the idea of bringing a bit of theatre to the walk-on. But you better have the pedigree to back it up, which she does."

Melbourne Fashion Festival head Caroline Ralphsmith, watching from the front row, praised the "incredible overall impression for the full entrance moment" and called it "wonderful self-expression."

In a sport sometimes criticized for being too conservative, Osaka is showing that bringing your whole self to the court, jellyfish obsession and all, makes the game more joyful for everyone.
