Napa Softball Team Wins First Title in 15 Years

The Justin-Siena Braves softball team just ended a 15-year championship drought in the most dramatic way possible.

The fifth-seeded Braves stunned second-seeded Healdsburg 14-8 on Friday night to capture the North Coast Section Division 6 championship. For the Napa team, this victory was especially sweet after Healdsburg had crushed them 30-12 earlier in the season.

The Braves came out swinging in the first inning, with five players delivering hits that built a commanding 7-0 lead. Caiden Grimmer, Georgia Andres, Lilah Fern, Lily Aguilera and Ale Guerrero all drove in runs as Justin-Siena batted around the order.

But Healdsburg wasn't ready to surrender their home diamond without a fight. The Greyhounds erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Sammy White's grand slam that brought the crowd to its feet.

When a throwing error allowed Izzy Osborn to circle the bases for three more runs, suddenly the score was 9-7. The championship that seemed secure was slipping away.

This is what makes sports beautiful. A team that won just one league game all season refused to believe their story was over.

Coach Don Maiden's squad had every reason to quit after their brutal season. Instead, they knocked off three higher seeds in the tournament, including the division's top team, to reach the championship game.

When Healdsburg mounted their fourth-inning comeback, the Braves didn't panic. Guerrero answered immediately with a two-run single in the fifth inning to rebuild the cushion.

The numbers tell an inspiring story. Grimmer, headed to the University of Texas at Dallas, had four hits and two RBIs in the championship game.

Guerrero contributed three hits and four RBIs while also pitching three solid innings of relief. Aguilera held Healdsburg hitless through three innings before the fourth-inning explosion.

The victory earned Justin-Siena a spot in next week's state tournament. After winning just one league contest, they're now playing for a Northern California championship.

"We knew we could do it," Grimmer said after the game. "We just fell short last time. This time we told ourselves that if we do everything we can and hit, then we will come out on top."
