NASA Captures Australia's Stunning Valley Fog From Space

When NASA's Terra satellite passed over Australia on a crisp May morning, it caught nature putting on a show that looked almost too beautiful to be real.

Autumn fog transformed the Victorian Alps into something resembling a dreamy watercolor painting. The fog followed the curves of rivers and valleys through several national parks, creating intricate branching patterns visible from space.

The science behind the beauty is surprisingly simple. As autumn nights grow longer in the Southern Hemisphere, the air has more time to cool and reach the dew point, the temperature where water vapor condenses into fog.

Cold air is heavier than warm air, so it naturally flows downward and pools in valleys like invisible water. Mountain valleys stay foggy longer than flat areas because the high walls keep them shaded even after sunrise.

This particular fog formed along the Mitta Mitta River, Buffalo River, Livingston Creek, Lake Dartmouth, and Snowy River. A cold snap had moistened the ground days earlier, setting the stage perfectly for the fog show when calmer weather arrived.

The same atmospheric conditions created something even more unusual a few hundred kilometers away. An arch-shaped cloud stretched across Port Phillip Bay, extending roughly from St. Leonards to Mount Eliza.

Scientists believe the arch formed when land breezes and sea breezes met and interacted with the horseshoe shape of the bay itself. Satellite footage showed the cloud moving southward across the water as the mountain fog faded away.
