NASA Plans 2027 Moon Lander Test Before Astronaut Return

Before astronauts set foot on the Moon again, NASA is giving its spacecraft a full dress rehearsal in 2027.

The space agency announced its Artemis III demonstration mission will test two commercial Moon landers built by SpaceX and Blue Origin. Both companies will launch test versions of their lunar spacecraft to practice docking with NASA's Orion capsule in Earth orbit, working out any kinks before the real Moon landing happens in 2028.

It's a smart safety move. The test lets mission controllers practice the delicate dance of linking up two spacecraft while astronauts are still close to home, where help is available if something goes wrong.

Blue Origin's approach puts real astronauts inside their test lander. Up to two crew members will climb aboard the Blue Moon cabin, which includes all the systems needed for actual lunar missions including life support, avionics, and flight controls. The company will even fly a spacesuit simulator similar to the "Moonikin" mannequin that rode aboard the first Artemis test flight, collecting data about conditions inside the cabin.

SpaceX is taking a different route. Their massive 171-foot Starship will dock with Orion using a special nose-mounted system, but astronauts won't go inside during this test. Instead, NASA and SpaceX will focus on how the combined spacecraft handle together and test communication systems.

"Each human landing system provider has taken a different approach," said Steve Creech, NASA's Human Landing System Program manager. Both companies have set ambitious goals designed to build confidence before the crewed landing.

The demonstration mission launches while SpaceX and Blue Origin continue refining their designs. Blue Origin's test lander incorporates the same major systems planned for their Mark 2 crew lander. SpaceX will fly their latest Starship Version 3, currently in production and testing.
