NASA Plans Massive Moon Base by 2036

Humanity is finally getting serious about moving to the moon.

NASA announced a comprehensive roadmap on May 26 to build a permanent lunar base spanning hundreds of square kilometers near the south pole. The timeline stretches from 2025 through 2036, transforming decades of speculation into concrete missions with real launch dates.

The plan starts small but moves fast. Three uncrewed missions will launch before the end of this year to scout landing sites and test autonomous rovers. These robot explorers will map the lunar surface in detail, reducing risks for the astronauts who follow.

Moon Base I launches later this year using a lander from Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin. Moon Base II and III will follow, carrying vehicles from Astrobotic and Intuitive Machines. Each mission builds knowledge about how to operate safely on the lunar surface.

The project unfolds in three distinct phases. Phase one, running until 2029, focuses on securing reliable access to the moon. Phase two extends to 2032 to get basic operations running. Phase three completes the actual base construction by 2036.

NASA is betting on private companies to make this happen. Astrolab and Lunar Outpost each received over $200 million to develop lunar terrain vehicles. Astrolab's design carries nearly 1,000 kilograms and moves at 10 kilometers per hour. Lunar Outpost's nimbler version travels at 14 kilometers per hour and drives itself.

In 2028, four hopping drones will make short jumps across the surface, capturing high-resolution photos of potential landing sites. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is building these aerial scouts in-house, while Firefly Aerospace handles the spacecraft that delivers them.

The mission builds on recent Artemis program success. Four astronauts circled the moon and returned safely to Earth in April, proving NASA can send people back to our nearest neighbor after a fifty-year gap.

This plan represents the most concrete steps toward permanent human presence beyond Earth in history. Unlike the Apollo missions, which planted flags and came home, this effort aims to stay. A lunar base could serve as a launching point for Mars missions, a laboratory for space science, and proof that humanity can thrive beyond our home planet.

The focus on the south pole is strategic. That region contains water ice in permanently shadowed craters, a crucial resource for drinking water, oxygen, and even rocket fuel. Building there gives future residents the best chance at self-sufficiency.
