NASA Plans Monthly Moon Landings to Build Lunar Base by 2033

🤯 Mind Blown

NASA just announced an ambitious plan to ramp up to monthly moon landings, transforming space exploration from occasional missions into a regular delivery service. The agency aims to complete 73 robotic missions over the next decade, building the foundation for a permanent lunar base.

NASA is about to turn moon landings into something as routine as package deliveries here on Earth.

The space agency revealed its roadmap to create a permanent lunar base, starting with a dramatic increase in robotic lander missions. After just two successful landings in 2025, NASA plans to scale up to monthly missions, with 73 landings scheduled between now and 2033.

"Phase 1 is all about getting to the moon reliably," said Carlos Garcia-Galan, program executive for Moon Base at NASA. The first phase runs from 2026 through 2028 and includes 21 landings carrying 4,000 kilograms of supplies and equipment to different areas where the base might be built.

The pace picks up quickly. NASA projects two landings in 2026, jumping to nine in 2027 and ten in 2028. Phase 2, from 2029 to 2032, adds 24 more missions with heavier cargo, including landers capable of delivering up to 5,000 kilograms each.

By Phase 3 in 2033, the landers will haul up to eight metric tons per trip. These missions will handle regular logistics runs and even bring cargo back from the moon, just like a two-way delivery service.

The plan marks a major shift in NASA's approach. The agency is moving away from its original "shots on goal" philosophy where failures were expected. Garcia-Galan called the new strategy "shots on goal and win the game."

NASA is offering more support to the private companies building these landers, sharing decades of planetary landing expertise. "We know how to land things on a different planet," Garcia-Galan explained. The agency will connect companies with expert engineers and identify potential bottlenecks in manufacturing, testing facilities, and technology.

The agency also announced its latest mission contract: a $180.4 million award to Intuitive Machines for a 2030 landing near the lunar south pole. The lander will carry seven NASA instruments plus two small rovers, including one from the Australian Space Agency.

The Ripple Effect

This acceleration could transform how humanity operates in space. Finding and fixing "chokepoints" in lander production now means companies can build the manufacturing and testing infrastructure needed for sustained space exploration. The lessons learned from monthly moon missions could eventually apply to Mars and beyond.

The timeline also hints at bigger things ahead. While NASA focused on robotic missions at this event, human landings using landers from SpaceX and Blue Origin could begin as soon as 2028. Both companies are working to simplify their designs and speed up development.

A permanent lunar base isn't science fiction anymore; it's scheduled delivery.
