NASA Scraps Orbital Station, Plans $20B Moon Base by 2032

After decades of dreaming, NASA just announced we're building an actual city on the moon.

The space agency revealed this week it's scrapping plans for a Gateway station orbiting the moon. Instead, it's investing $20 billion to construct a permanent base directly on the lunar surface by 2032.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman made the announcement at the agency's Washington headquarters, outlining major changes to the Artemis II moon project. The shift comes after criticism that the orbital station was wasteful and distracted from more ambitious goals.

"It should not really surprise anyone that we are pausing Gateway in its current form and focusing on infrastructure that supports sustained operations on the lunar surface," Isaacman told delegates. The 43-year-old entrepreneur emphasized that already-built hardware and international partnerships would be repurposed for the new surface base.

The original Gateway station was meant to orbit the moon and serve as a launch point for astronauts shuttling to the surface. Now, NASA is skipping the middle step and going straight to building on solid ground.

The timeline remains aggressive. NASA still plans to return humans to the moon by 2028, marking the first lunar landing since Apollo 11 touched down in July 1969.

The rush reflects a new space race heating up with China, which aims to land astronauts on the moon by 2030. China and Russia have also announced plans to build a nuclear power plant at the moon's south pole as part of their International Lunar Research Station, targeting completion by 2036.

The Ripple Effect

This shift represents more than national pride. A permanent moon base could revolutionize space exploration by serving as a proving ground for technologies needed for Mars missions.

NASA and SpaceX founder Elon Musk have both identified the moon as a critical stepping stone toward eventually reaching the Red Planet. Last month, Musk pivoted from his Mars focus to champion what he calls a "Moon City" within the next decade.

The project also demonstrates how competition can accelerate progress. What seemed like science fiction just years ago is now moving forward with concrete budgets and deadlines.

International partners who contributed to Gateway won't be left behind. Their equipment and commitments are being redirected to support the surface base, turning what could have been wasted effort into building blocks for humanity's first extraterrestrial home.

The moon base could become operational within seven years, creating a permanent human presence on another world for the first time in history.
