NASA Webb Telescope Team Brings Stars to NYC's High Line

Stargazers in New York City are getting a once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore the universe alongside scientists from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope team. On July 7, 2026, Webb experts will join the High Line's weekly astronomy nights to share exhibits, answer questions, and celebrate the wonders overhead.

The free event runs from 7:00 to 9:30 PM at Little West 12th Street on the High Line. Visitors of all ages and experience levels can peer through high-powered telescopes provided by the Amateur Astronomers Association, which has been hosting stargazing sessions on the elevated park since 2009.

Expected sights include Venus shining brilliantly in the twilight sky, sunspots larger than Earth visible on our closest star, and the Summer Triangle constellation. Telescope operators will also guide viewers to Albireo, a stunning double star that reveals two different colored suns orbiting each other.

NASA's Webb team will bring hands-on exhibits showcasing how the world's most powerful space telescope peers back to the dawn of time. Launched in 2021, Webb has revolutionized our understanding of distant galaxies, mysterious black holes, and planets orbiting other stars.

The collaboration reflects a beautiful mission: making the cosmos accessible to everyone. The Amateur Astronomers Association, founded in 1927, has spent nearly a century bringing free astronomy education to New Yorkers through sidewalk observing sessions, school visits, and their popular AAA Sky podcast.
