NASA's Artemis II: 4 Astronauts Making Moon History in 2026

For the first time in over half a century, humans are heading back to the moon, and this crew looks nothing like the last one.

NASA's Artemis II mission will launch as soon as April 2026, carrying four astronauts on a 600,000-mile journey around the moon. The crew includes the first woman, first Black person, and first Canadian ever assigned to a lunar mission.

Commander Reid Wiseman, a 50-year-old Navy test pilot and single father from Baltimore, will lead the historic flight. Naval aviator Victor Glover from California becomes the first Black person to venture into deep space, building on his experience piloting SpaceX missions to the International Space Station.

Engineer Christina Koch will make history as the first woman to fly to the moon. Canadian Space Agency fighter pilot Jeremy Hansen rounds out the team as the first non-American on a lunar mission.

The 10-day journey will take the crew beyond the moon's far side, deeper into space than any human has traveled before. They won't land on the lunar surface, but they'll test critical systems for future missions that will.

The astronauts face real risks during their voyage. Dangerous radiation levels, communication blackouts with mission control, and untested hardware worth over $40 billion all present challenges the crew has trained extensively to handle.

Hansen spoke candidly about preparing his family for the risks. "I've had that conversation with my wife and my children," he told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp, discussing scenarios where communication fails and the crew must problem-solve their way home.

Yet the crew radiates optimism about what this mission represents. "We need to celebrate this moment in human history," Glover said after his selection in 2023.

The Ripple Effect

Artemis II opens doors for everyone who never saw themselves reflected in space exploration. Every Apollo astronaut was a White American man, almost all with military backgrounds. This crew shows a new generation that lunar exploration belongs to everyone.

The mission serves as a stepping stone for Artemis III, which will land near the moon's unexplored south pole. NASA's ultimate goal is establishing permanent lunar habitats and learning how humans can survive monthslong journeys to Mars.

Wiseman keeps his mission's bigger purpose front and center. When asked on "The Late Show" why we're returning to the moon, his answer was simple: "Because we want to see humans on Mars."

Four astronauts will soon fly farther than anyone before them, proving the next giant leap belongs to all of us.
