Nashville Airport to Honor Dolly Parton's Legacy

Nashville International Airport could soon welcome travelers in the name of Tennessee's most beloved daughter, Dolly Parton, who died Tuesday at 80 after a brief cancer battle.

Governor Bill Lee announced Friday that he spoke with Parton's team about the proposal this week. Her team expressed appreciation and openness to continuing the conversation, marking a major step toward honoring the country music legend's extraordinary legacy.

The push didn't come from politicians alone. Over 155,000 people signed a Change.org petition calling for the rename, originally launched in January by fans who believed Parton's impact reached far beyond her music. Following her death, tens of thousands more added their voices, turning a grassroots campaign into a movement.

State Representative Todd Warner pledged to introduce legislation supporting the change. Nashville Council member Russ Bradford said he would sponsor a resolution asking the airport authority to consider it, though the authority holds final decision power.

The tribute carries special meaning because Parton spent her life lifting others up, not seeking pedestals for herself. In 2021, she asked Tennessee lawmakers to withdraw a bill proposing a statue of her at the state Capitol, saying the timing didn't feel right during difficult times facing the country.

"Given all that is going on in the world, I don't think putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time," Parton said then. She added that perhaps someday, after she was gone, if people still felt she deserved it, she would "stand proud in our great State Capitol as a grateful Tennessean."
