🦸 Hero Alert

A Navy veteran in Maryland is turning overgrowns lawns into acts of kindness, one yard at a time. Springer Blankenship volunteers with a nonprofit that helps neighbors who can't maintain their properties.

When Springer Blankenship finishes his Navy shifts, most people would kick back and relax. Instead, he grabs a lawn mower and heads to the yards of neighbors who need him most.

The Glen Burnie, Maryland resident volunteers with I Want To Mow Your Lawn, a nonprofit that provides free lawn care to people who physically or financially can't do it themselves. Every lawn he tackles tells a story of someone struggling to keep up.

One neighbor had been reported to the county for an overgrown yard and faced fines she couldn't afford. Blankenship showed up and knocked it out before penalties hit. That's just one of more than 50 requests he fielded this past summer.

The demand grew so high that two more volunteers, Kristen and Chris, joined the team. "I love the opportunity to give back and really support people," Kristen said. "I feel like that's what community is supposed to be."

For Blankenship, the work goes deeper than trimming grass. He's discovered that many of the people he helps are just as hungry for conversation as they are for a tidy lawn.

"Sometimes it feels like some of these people just want somebody to talk to more than they want their lawn taken care of," he said. "Some of them will just sit there and talk to me forever."

Mrs. Peggy, one of his regulars, always brings out snacks and water. Blankenship jokes that he spends more time chatting with her than actually mowing.

Sunny's Take

What started as yard work has blossomed into genuine human connection. In a world where neighbors sometimes don't know each other's names, Blankenship is building relationships one lawn at a time. He's proving that service isn't just about the task at hand but about showing up for people when they need to feel seen.

Small acts of kindness still change the world.
