NC Fisherman Saves 3 Lives After Boat Capsizes Off Ocracoke

A routine fishing trip became a heroic rescue mission when Eddie and Michelle Cameron encountered four people fighting for survival in rough seas off the North Carolina coast.

The Morehead City couple was searching for drum fish near Ocracoke when Michelle spotted trouble. "I think that boat's in trouble," she said, looking over her shoulder at what was already an overturned vessel with people in the water.

Eddie immediately steered toward the capsized boat, navigating through choppy conditions that pushed nearly 18 inches of water into his own vessel. Every second counted as the couple worked to pull two struggling survivors aboard their boat.

A third person was rescued by another nearby vessel, which also contacted the U.S. Coast Guard. The Cameron's found a fourth victim unresponsive in the water and brought him aboard.

"We got him in the boat and performed CPR for about 15 minutes, but could not bring him back," Cameron said. Despite their efforts, one life was lost in the tragedy.
