NC State Walk-On Earns Scholarship Two Weeks After Joining

When Audrey Ericksen transferred to NC State from Boston University, she knew there were no guarantees. The Cary native and Green Level High School's all-time leading scorer just wanted to play basketball close to home, even if it meant walking on without financial support.

Two weeks into her new journey, head coach Wes Moore called a team meeting. He handed Ericksen a bill for $30,000 covering tuition, room and board, then asked if she could pay it.

"At first, I wasn't really sure what was happening," Ericksen said. "I just saw my name with a bill and thought, 'This cannot be good.'"

Then Moore ripped the bill in half. "No bill! You're on scholarship!" he shouted as her teammates erupted in celebration.

The senior guard said watching her teammates' reaction was her favorite part. The pure joy on their faces strengthened the bond she already felt with her new squad.

The scholarship lifted an enormous financial weight from Ericksen's family. Her parents, who had spent years supporting her basketball dreams through countless sacrifices, were proud, excited and relieved.

Ericksen's story shows what happens when dedication meets opportunity. She transferred knowing she might spend her entire senior year paying out of pocket, but she chose passion over guarantees.

Her willingness to bet on herself paid off faster than anyone expected. Sometimes the biggest rewards come when we're willing to work without promises.

Now Ericksen has her sights set on something she's never experienced: the NCAA Tournament. NC State hasn't missed March Madness since 2016 and reached the Final Four just two years ago.

"I'm excited to win with this team," Ericksen said. "Everyone is so motivated and ready."

The hometown kid is finally home, with a full ride and a real shot at making noise this season.
