Nearly 2 million people transformed Madrid into one massive street party Monday as Spain's World Cup champions came home with the trophy.

The scenes were electric. An estimated 1.8 million fans lined the streets of Spain's capital to welcome back their national team after Sunday's 1-0 victory over Argentina in New Jersey. Players wearing "We Are Champions" shirts danced atop an open-top bus as it rolled through historic avenues while fans sang, cheered, and waved Spanish flags under the summer sun.

The celebration started with royal honors. The 26 players and coaching staff first met with Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, then visited Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at Moncloa Palace. "Thank you to the coaches and players for the style of play, the effort and the victory," Sánchez told the team. "We have truly enjoyed watching you play."

Then came the parade. The bus, emblazoned with "Stars shine together" and photos of the players, carried the team through central Madrid to Cibeles Square, where 120,000 fans packed the historic plaza. Temperatures soared to 95 degrees, but supporters had claimed their spots since late morning, armed with umbrellas and determination.

At Cibeles, the party reached another level. Each player was introduced individually to roaring crowds, choosing their own entrance music for the moment. Midfielder Álex Baena, celebrating his 25th birthday, walked in carrying the World Cup trophy. Striker Borja Iglesias turned DJ while teammates danced on stage alongside Spanish pop stars Aitana, Ana Mena, and Lola Índigo.

Coach Luis de la Fuente captured the mood perfectly before the festivities began. "It's been an emotional and proud experience to represent a wonderful country with such passionate and devoted fans," he said. "We are filled with joy." His players later hoisted him into the air during his introduction, and he sang along to his entrance song.

The Ripple Effect

This victory resonates far beyond the pitch. Spain now holds both the men's and women's World Cup titles simultaneously, becoming the first nation ever to achieve this feat. The women's team won their championship in 2023, and now both trophies sit in Spanish hands.

The celebrations started the moment Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in extra time Sunday. Thousands poured into Madrid's streets from bars and restaurants, turning Puerta de Sol and other major squares into impromptu dance floors. Car horns blared, flares lit up the night, and many partied until dawn.

"I'm very happy. I've slept three or four hours, but for the team, I'll do whatever it takes," said 19-year-old Victor Álvarez, one of countless fans who showed up exhausted but elated. Fifty-nine-year-old civil servant Gema Rodero described watching at home: "Honestly, it was very exciting. We preferred not to go to any bar or anything, to experience it at home, focused and very happy, very joyful."

The team's journey ends where it began, with a nation united in celebration and pride for what they accomplished together.
