Neptune Lines Fits Ships With Carbon Capture Technology

A shipping company just took a major step toward cleaner oceans by equipping two of its car carrier vessels with pollution-fighting technology that's ready for tomorrow's climate solutions.

Neptune Lines, a leading European short-sea car carrier operator, partnered with Value Maritime to retrofit the Neptune Tharros and Neptune Ethos with the Filtree system. Each ship can carry 4,700 vehicles and will now operate far cleaner than before.

The technology tackles multiple pollutants at once. The system removes 98% of sulfur oxide emissions, allowing the ships to meet strict requirements for sensitive coastal areas. It also captures 90% of tiny PM2.5 particles and 99% of larger PM10 particles, the kind of pollution that affects air quality in port cities.

What makes this retrofit special is its future-ready design. The ships have reserved space onboard for easy upgrades to full carbon capture capabilities when the technology becomes available. That means Neptune Lines won't need another expensive retrofit down the road.

This marks the first time Value Maritime's technology has been installed on pure car carriers, opening up a whole new segment of the shipping industry to cleaner operations. Installation is scheduled for summer 2026 in the Mediterranean.

The collaboration shows how practical solutions can move the shipping industry toward sustainability without sacrificing efficiency. Neptune Lines can continue delivering vehicles across Europe while dramatically reducing their environmental footprint.
