Netherlands and India Partner to Scale Green Hydrogen

The Netherlands and India are combining their superpowers to make green hydrogen affordable and accessible worldwide.

A new report released at India Energy Week 2026 in Goa maps out exactly how these two countries can accelerate the clean energy revolution together. The partnership brings Dutch innovation and infrastructure expertise together with India's massive scale and rapidly growing renewable energy capacity.

The numbers tell a compelling story. The Netherlands already handles 13 percent of total EU energy use through the Port of Rotterdam. India, meanwhile, is backing its ambitions with concrete policy through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, offering enormous production potential at a scale few countries can match.

Dr. Michiel Heijdra, Director General for Climate and Energy at the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, presented the partnership blueprint at the conference. The report identifies five key areas for collaboration: aligning policies, turning India's hydrogen targets into real projects, creating a dedicated Netherlands-India green hydrogen corridor to European markets, accelerating innovation through joint research, and building resilient supply chains for electrolyser manufacturing.

Green hydrogen could be the missing piece in the global energy puzzle. Unlike fossil fuels, it produces only water when burned. The challenge has always been making it cheaply enough to compete.

That's where complementary strengths matter. The Netherlands brings cutting-edge system integration technology and established hydrogen infrastructure. India offers the scale to drive down costs and a government committed to making clean hydrogen a national priority.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership extends far beyond two countries signing agreements. By harmonizing certification standards and regulations, the Netherlands and India are creating a template other nations can follow. Joint research centers and pilot projects will speed up technological breakthroughs that make clean hydrogen cheaper for everyone.

The collaboration addresses real barriers too. Water use, raw material sourcing, production costs, and infrastructure gaps are all on the table. Twenty-one Dutch companies joined the Netherlands mission to India Energy Week, signaling serious business interest in turning plans into projects.
