Netherlands Unemployment Drops to 3.8% in June

The Netherlands just hit a milestone that shows its economy is thriving. Unemployment dropped to 3.8% in June, meaning 393,000 people were actively looking for work compared to 416,000 at the beginning of 2024.

The numbers tell a story of steady improvement. Over the past three months, unemployment has fallen by an average of 5,000 people each month, according to the Dutch national statistics office CBS.

The construction, agriculture, and temporary work sectors led the way with the biggest improvements. By the end of June, unemployment benefit claims in these industries had dropped significantly as seasonal jobs opened up in spring.

The trends go beyond just one month of good news. The benefits agency UWV recorded 197,000 unemployment benefit claims at the end of June, down 1.2% from May alone.

With 3.2 million people not actively seeking work due to retirement, illness, or other reasons, the low unemployment rate reflects genuine economic strength rather than people simply giving up their job searches.
