They've been making educated guesses instead of exact measurements.

Beyond safety, the chip monitors 26 cells at once, eight more than any competitor. For the 104-cell modules becoming standard in grid storage, engineers only need four chips instead of six, reducing cost and complexity.

When you can prove exactly how healthy your batteries are and predict problems months in advance, these multi-million dollar projects become much more attractive to funders.
