New Connecticut STEM Lab Opens to Inspire Future Scientists

A new Innovation Lab at the Connecticut Science Center is opening doors for thousands of students to explore how scientific discoveries become life-changing medicines.

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals partnered with the Connecticut Science Center to create a dedicated STEM learning space focused on human health, biology, and pharmaceutical sciences. The lab officially opened March 27 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that drew more than 500 middle and high school students, along with educators and industry professionals.

The Innovation Lab offers hands-on workshops and career-focused programming designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications. Students can now explore how researchers develop medicines that transform patient lives, giving them a tangible connection to potential career paths they might never have considered.

"Investing in STEM education means investing in the future generation of innovators, creators, and scientists," said Jean-Michel Boers, Boehringer Ingelheim USA president and CEO. The company's U.S. headquarters and a major research and development center are located in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Connecticut Science Center president Matt Fleury emphasized the lab's practical approach. "We're creating more opportunities for students to explore the science behind medicines and see how discoveries in the lab lead to impactful outcomes for patients and communities," he said.

Fleury sees the lab as inspiration as much as education. "This will expand access to STEM learning and help inspire young people across Connecticut to imagine themselves shaping the future of science," he said.
