Cyclists who love the grip of platform pedals may finally have a way to protect their knees from the strain that comes with staying locked in one position.
Kenneth Belknap invented the 8 Degree Pedal, the first platform pedal that floats. The innovation brings technology previously only available on clipless pedals to everyday riders.
Here's why this matters. When your shoe stays rigidly in place on traditional platform pedals with traction pins, your foot can't naturally adjust with each pedal stroke. This misalignment creates stress on your knees, hips, and ankles over time, sometimes leading to joint injuries.
Clipless pedals solved this problem years ago by allowing the shoe to pivot slightly inward or outward while still attached. This "float" lets your foot self-center naturally with every rotation, keeping everything aligned with your knee.
The 8 Degree Pedal hides a clever spring-loaded mechanism inside its aluminum body. It allows the pedal to move up to eight degrees with your foot relative to the crank, then automatically returns to center. Your feet get the stability they need without forcing your joints into unnatural positions.

The pedal comes ready to ride with medium-tension springs that work for most cyclists. Riders can swap in lighter or heavier springs using a simple Allen wrench to match their preference and riding style.
Two models are available now, both priced at $240. The larger X8-2 offers more foot space at 108 x 111 millimeters, while the compact X8-3 measures 100 x 100 millimeters. Both feature adjustable traction pins and come in eight colors.
The Ripple Effect
This innovation reaches beyond serious mountain bikers and BMX riders. Commuters who ride daily can protect their joints from repetitive stress injuries that build up over years. Weekend warriors can enjoy longer rides without the knee pain that often cuts adventures short.
The technology also improves bike control. When your feet don't need constant repositioning, you maintain better stability on technical terrain or during quick maneuvers in city traffic.
Belknap is already developing an even lighter version, showing this is just the beginning for floating platform pedals.
Protecting our bodies while doing activities we love means we can keep riding for years to come.
