New Heat Pumps Run Directly on Solar Power, Cut Energy Bills

Homeowners who want to heat their homes with solar power just got a breakthrough that could save them hundreds of dollars every year.

GoodWe, a Chinese energy technology company, unveiled a new line of residential heat pumps at a Shanghai trade show last week that runs directly on solar panel electricity. The innovation eliminates a costly problem that has plagued solar heating systems for years: the energy lost when converting power back and forth between different electrical formats.

Traditional solar heat pumps waste electricity by converting DC power from solar panels into AC power, then back to DC power inside the heat pump itself. GoodWe's new system skips that wasteful middle step entirely by sending DC power straight from the panels to the heat pump's internal system.

The company offers eight different models ranging from 6 kilowatts for small homes up to 34 kilowatts for larger properties or small businesses. The smallest units achieve an efficiency rating of 4.70, meaning they produce 4.70 units of heating or cooling for every unit of electricity consumed. Larger models reach 4.55 efficiency, still well above traditional heating systems.

These aren't just for warm climates either. GoodWe equipped every model with advanced compressor technology from Panasonic that keeps homes comfortable even in freezing weather. The systems can heat water up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit for smaller models and 122 degrees for larger ones, providing space heating, air conditioning, floor heating, and hot water all from one unit.
