New Jersey Vocational Students Honored at Baseball Game

When 275 students walked onto a professional baseball field to roaring applause, it marked more than just a night at the ballpark. It was a celebration of young people mastering real-world skills that will shape their futures.

Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School took over TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater for a special night honoring their SkillsUSA competition winners. The students, who earned medals at the New Jersey state championships, paraded across the field while the scoreboard announced their achievements to the crowd.

Principal Michael Meyer kicked off the celebration by throwing the ceremonial first pitch. Between innings, the names of all SCVTHS SkillsUSA competitors flashed on the big screen, earning cheers from the stands.

The school offers 22 career paths, from Agricultural Science to Welding, plus an honors program for students pursuing health and medical careers. Every student at SCVTHS joins SkillsUSA, a national organization dedicated to building skilled professionals and career-ready leaders.

"These students have proven that skill, dedication, and pride in their craft can earn a standing ovation anywhere," said Mike McClain, the school's Electrical Construction instructor and SkillsUSA Advisor. The Patriots capped the night with a 9-6 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs.

This celebration reflects a growing recognition that career and technical education deserves the same spotlight as traditional academics. By honoring students who excel in skilled trades, the community sends a powerful message: every path to success matters.
