New Platform Helps Canadian Muslims Pay Down Mosque Debt

Paying down debt at your local mosque just became a whole lot more transparent.

Own Your Masjid, a new platform from Toronto-based Process Plus Marketing, connects Muslim donors directly to their mosques' and Islamic schools' outstanding debts. The best part? Every dollar goes straight to paying down loans, and everyone can see the balance drop in real time.

Omar Alsayyed, the managing partner behind the project, spotted a problem during Ramadan fundraising season. Mosques would ask for money to pay down debt from land purchases and construction, but donors had no way to verify their contributions actually reduced those loans.

The solution required radical transparency. Mosques and Islamic schools must submit their charity registration details, complete loan documentation, and financial statements to get verified. Once approved, they publicly display their debt balance for the entire community to see.

"Can we get organizations to commit to being that transparent?" Alsayyed asked. "If so, then the flow begins."

The platform itself never touches the money. Donors pay directly into verified institution accounts, cutting out any middleman fees or confusion about where funds go.

Why This Inspires

Early response has been enthusiastic, with three GTA institutions already expressing interest in piloting the platform. Community members are telling Alsayyed this is exactly what the sector needs: clear answers about debt levels, creditors, and loan terms.

The transparency model addresses a bigger challenge across the entire charitable sector. Donors increasingly want to know how much organizations spend on marketing, salaries, and operations versus their core mission. Own Your Masjid takes that accountability one step further by making debt reduction trackable in real time.

Canadian Muslim communities face higher land costs than their American counterparts, especially in expensive cities like Toronto and Vancouver where many congregations are concentrated. Some debt carries interest, making quick paydown even more urgent from a religious perspective.

Alsayyed is seeking 10 initial organizations to launch with and hopes to see donors move from one-time gifts to regular monthly contributions. Success means not just reducing debt, but building lasting trust between institutions and the communities they serve.

The platform shows how a simple idea, financial transparency, can restore confidence and open wallets for a cause people already care about.
