New Scholarship Cuts Costs for Mississippi Nursing Students
Holmes Community College nursing students can now access a new endowed scholarship that removes financial barriers to advanced training. The fund helps bridge students and aims to strengthen Mississippi's healthcare workforce.
Nursing students at Holmes Community College just got a financial boost that could change the trajectory of their careers and their community's health.
The LCT Nursing Advancement Scholarship now supports students pursuing accelerated nursing degrees through the college's bridge programs. Licensed practical nurses, paramedics, and those in the practical nursing hybrid option can apply for annual funding to complete their Associate Degree in Nursing.
Christiana Palmer, nursing home administrator of Grenada Living Center, created the scholarship through the Holmes Development Foundation. Her goal is simple: remove the financial roadblocks that keep talented healthcare workers from advancing their credentials.
The scholarship requires students to maintain full-time enrollment and keep their GPA above 2.0. Recipients are selected through the college's scholarship committee, which reports student progress to the donor each year.
The endowed fund can grow through additional contributions, meaning more students could benefit in future years. The structure ensures sustainable support for nursing education long into the future.

The Ripple Effect
This scholarship addresses a critical need beyond individual students. Mississippi, like much of the nation, faces a healthcare worker shortage that affects patient care in rural communities.
By supporting LPNs and paramedics who want to become registered nurses, the scholarship creates a pathway for experienced healthcare workers to expand their skills. These are professionals who already understand patient care and are committed to serving their communities.
Dr. Lindy McCain, Vice President for Student Affairs, sees the bigger picture. "This scholarship provides an important opportunity for our students to continue advancing in the nursing field without as many financial barriers," she said.
The hope is that scholarship recipients will not only graduate but stay in healthcare, potentially serving the very communities where they trained. Each nurse who advances their education multiplies their ability to care for more patients with more complex needs.
Applications opened this academic year, giving current students immediate access to support. Interested students can contact Dr. McCain at lmccain@holmescc.edu or call (662) 472-9067.
One scholarship might seem small, but for the students who receive it and the patients they'll serve, it represents real progress toward healthier communities.
