The study found only two situations where keeping a gas car makes sense. Plug-in hybrids with large batteries already run mostly on electricity, so the benefit is minimal. And cars that barely get driven, like a retiree's backup vehicle used just a few thousand miles yearly, don't rack up enough electric miles to justify the switch.
For everyone else, the required mileage threshold is surprisingly low. An electric car needs just 4,400 miles annually to repay its carbon debt, while electric trucks need 6,700 miles. That's well below the 12,500 miles most Americans drive each year.
The climate case for going electric keeps getting stronger too. As the power grid shifts toward renewable energy, charging an EV becomes even cleaner. Improvements in battery recycling will further reduce manufacturing emissions.
