Digital Impact for Species lets anyone paste a website URL and instantly see its environmental footprint. The tool goes beyond typical carbon calculations to show water use, energy consumption, and translates everything into relatable comparisons with nature.
YouTube gets a C rating, meaning there's room for improvement. Every 9,000 monthly visits uses 10 liters of water, enough for a capuchin monkey to survive 77 days. An Amazon rainforest tree would need to work 41 days to absorb the CO2 from those same visits.
"When we visit a website, we rarely think about the environmental impact," says project lead Dr. Marcos Oliveira Jr. "But there is a high cost, from the energy consumed as the information makes its way from the data centre to your computer or smartphone, to the water used to cool servers."
The internet accounts for 3.7 percent of global carbon emissions, surpassing the entire aviation industry. If the internet were a country, it would rank as the world's fourth largest polluter.

The tool works by measuring the exact size of all resources loaded when you open a webpage, including images, text, and video. It checks whether the site runs on renewable energy or fossil fuels, then calculates the real world impact using scientific data.

This isn't about shaming websites with large footprints. Dr. Oliveira Jr emphasizes the goal is sparking conversation about building a more sustainable internet.
Website hosts can make simple changes to reduce their impact. Using fewer images, limiting fonts, simplifying navigation, and avoiding unnecessary videos all help. Switching to web hosts powered by renewable energy makes an even bigger difference.
The tool empowers both consumers and companies to understand their digital footprint. Armed with this knowledge, web developers can optimize their sites while users can make more informed choices about which platforms to support.
