New Zealand Solar Beats Coal for First Time Ever

For the first time in its history, New Zealand generated more electricity from sunshine than from coal over a 12-month period. Solar power jumped 56% in just one quarter, reaching a record 242 gigawatt-hours between April and June 2026.

The shift marks a turning point for a country that once relied heavily on coal to keep the lights on. Just five years ago, coal generation was climbing steadily, but today it has plummeted by 74% as massive solar farms sprout across New Zealand's landscape.

Renewables now power 92% of New Zealand's electricity grid, the highest share ever recorded for a second quarter. Strong rainfall boosted hydropower while new geothermal plants came online, creating a perfect storm of clean energy that squeezed fossil fuels nearly out of existence.

The transformation accelerated after a 2024 energy crisis exposed the risks of depending too heavily on weather-dependent hydropower. When reservoirs ran dry and gas supplies dwindled, electricity prices skyrocketed and coal use temporarily spiked.

That wake-up call sparked a solar building boom. The 202-megawatt Tauhei solar farm opened in July near Te Aroha, where sheep now graze peacefully beneath rows of panels on former dairy land. It became New Zealand's largest solar plant, but not for long.

Construction crews are already installing panels at the massive 400-megawatt Te Rahui Solar Farm near Taupō, set to double that capacity when complete. Several other major projects reached financial close this year, transforming farmland and industrial sites into clean power generators.

The results speak for themselves. Coal imports dropped 94% to their lowest level since 2011. Wholesale electricity prices fell by two-thirds compared to last year. And the country is proving that small island nations can lead the charge toward 100% renewable energy.

New Zealand's solar surge shows other countries what's possible when crisis sparks action. The same government that once watched coal consumption climb has now presided over its near elimination, replaced by an expanding network of utility-scale solar farms that generate power while sheep graze and communities prosper.

The momentum continues to build as more projects break ground and connect to the grid. What seemed like an ambitious dream just a few years ago has become New Zealand's new reality: a future powered by sunshine, wind, and water instead of fossil fuels.
