New Zealand Sprinter Wins Bronze in Commonwealth Games Debut

Anna Grimaldi never thought she'd get her shot at the Commonwealth Games, but she proved that persistence pays off by taking home bronze in Glasgow.

The New Zealand para-sprinter clocked 12.46 seconds in the women's 100m T47 final, finishing behind two Canadian runners. For Grimaldi, just being on that starting line represented something much bigger than a medal.

"I genuinely thought that this wasn't going to happen," she told Sky Sport after the race. Para-sport events at the Commonwealth Games are selective, and Grimaldi had simply never had an event included before.

The road to Glasgow wasn't smooth. Since competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Grimaldi struggled to find her rhythm. This season brought injuries that left her feeling less than fully prepared.

"This season was really difficult," she admitted. "The timing kind of worked out to be here but maybe not to be 100% my best."

Still, when the pressure was on, Grimaldi delivered. She credits her ability to perform at major championships, even when smaller meets don't go her way.
