New Zealand Town Secures $260K for Pool Upgrade

Marton's community swimming pool is getting the upgrade it deserves, thanks to a $260,000 boost from New Zealand's Lottery Grants Board.

The funding marks a major win for Rangitīkei District Council, which is working to complete a $6 million refurbishment of the Marton Swim Centre. Construction is already underway, with contractors breaking ground on the long-awaited project.

Mayor Andy Waton couldn't hide his excitement about what this means for local families. "Every dollar of external funding we receive helps reduce the burden on our ratepayers while allowing us to invest in this important community facility that will be enjoyed for many years to come," he said.

The money comes from everyday Kiwis playing Lotto across the country. Last year alone, lottery funding supported more than 3,000 community projects nationwide, totaling $395 million.

This isn't the first funding victory for Marton's pool project. Earlier this year, the New Zealand Community Trust chipped in another $75,000, and council leaders say they're hunting for more grants to keep costs manageable for local ratepayers.

Deputy Mayor Dave Wilson emphasized that this project goes far beyond bricks and mortar. Kids will learn life-saving water safety skills here. Families will create summer memories. People of all ages will stay active and healthy together.

The Ripple Effect

When a small town like Marton gets a modern aquatic center, the benefits spread through the entire community. Local schools gain access to quality swimming programs.
