New Zealand's Cheapest EV Drops to $26,990

Electric vehicle ownership in New Zealand just got thousands of dollars cheaper. The Dongfeng Box, already one of the country's most affordable EVs, dropped its price to $26,990 during a clearance sale running through May.

The Chinese automaker first launched the Box in New Zealand last November at $29,990. That price matched the BYD Atto 1 as the nation's cheapest electric option, but the new reduction pushes it even lower than popular gas-powered models like the Kia Stonic.

For under $27,000, buyers get a surprisingly well-equipped vehicle. The Box includes a 12-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree camera, and adaptive cruise control.

The compact EV can travel 317 kilometers on a single charge, powered by a 43.89kWh battery pack. That range covers most daily commutes and local trips comfortably, with charging speeds up to 60kW when you need to top up.

Dongfeng sweetened the deal with generous coverage to build trust in the new brand. The Box comes with a 6-year/200,000km vehicle warranty, an 8-year/200,000km battery warranty, and six years of roadside assistance.

Creative design features add unexpected versatility. The front seats fold completely flat into the back seats, transforming the cabin into a lounge-like space perfect for beach trips or camping adventures.
