New Zealand's Ryan Fox Wins British Open at 39

With his hands shaking so badly he could barely grip his putter, Ryan Fox somehow delivered the shot of his life when it mattered most.

Fox's final round 68 gave him a winning total of 10-under par, claiming golf's most historic trophy in front of roaring crowds.

Fox became only the second Kiwi ever to hoist the famous Claret Jug, joining Bob Charles who won 63 years ago. The son of World Cup-winning All Black Grant Fox showed the same mental toughness his father displayed on rugby fields, refusing to crack as competitors around him faltered.

"With me, it's always been 'see a shot, hit a shot,'" Fox explained after his victory. "As soon as I start thinking about it too much, then some bad stuff creeps in."

That simple philosophy served him perfectly on the final hole. Fox hit two perfect shots to set up his winning putt, then somehow steadied his trembling hands long enough to roll the ball into the cup.

Australia's Lucas Herbert made a spirited run at the title, still in contention heading into the 17th hole. But a drive into the bushes led to a bogey that ended his championship hopes, leaving him tied for sixth at six-under par.

Young set the target earlier with a brilliant 64, the day's best round. Overnight leader Sam Burns narrowly missed matching that total when his birdie attempt at 18 slid past the hole, leaving him third at eight-under.
