Newport Beach Mural Honors Surfing Legend Duke Kahanamoku

Drivers cruising Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach are doing double takes at a massive new mural that honors a true legend of the waves.

Artist Jack Stricker recently completed a striking tribute to Duke Kahanamoku on the wall of an Ace Hardware in Corona del Mar. The Hawaiian icon is instantly recognizable to anyone who's ever touched a surfboard.

Kahanamoku earned his place in history long before Instagram made surf culture cool. He won Olympic gold medals in swimming and used his platform to introduce surfing to the world, transforming it from a nearly forgotten Hawaiian tradition into a global phenomenon.

But the mural celebrates more than his athletic achievements. In 1925, Kahanamoku was on the beach in Newport when a fishing vessel capsized offshore. He grabbed his surfboard and paddled into the chaos, pulling multiple people from the water and saving their lives.

Mark Schulein, who helped bring the mural project to life, says the response has been overwhelming. Passersby honk and shout "Duuuuuuke!" as they spot the artwork, a spontaneous celebration of someone who embodied the aloha spirit.

Kahanamoku also trained in Orange County pools during his swimming career, creating a direct connection between the local community and this international ambassador of ocean culture. The mural stands where locals and visitors alike can see it, a daily reminder of his legacy.
