Newtown's First Half Marathon to Benefit Local Ambulance Crew
A Connecticut town is launching its first ever half marathon to honor a beloved EMT while raising money for volunteer emergency responders. The August event welcomes runners of all levels and needs dozens of volunteers to make it happen.
Newtown, Connecticut is getting its first half marathon, and the whole community is invited to help make it a celebration of fitness, service, and small town spirit.
The inaugural Newtown Community Running event launches August 30 at Fairfield Hills, hosted by the local Newtown Road Runners club. Organizers chose to honor Greg Ritzinger, an EMT and founding member of the running club, with all proceeds going to the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Association.
Race director Bruce Goulart says the event needs more than just runners to succeed. He's calling on businesses, seniors, teens, and anyone who wants to pitch in to volunteer before and during race day.
"This is really meant to be a community-wide event for all ages," Goulart told attendees at the Newtown Senior Center. "If you don't walk or run, we have opportunities for everyone who would like to help."
The race offers something for every fitness level. Runners and walkers can choose a half marathon for $75, a 10K for $55, or a 5K for $35. Kids get to run for free. Local vendors will set up throughout the day, turning the race into a full community festival.
Two volunteer meetings are scheduled this month where organizers will explain available roles and answer questions. The first happens May 26 at 6 pm at Newtown Teen Center. A second meeting will follow to discuss "angels," special volunteer positions that organizers promise to explain in detail.
The Ripple Effect
The event connects three vital parts of Newtown's community fabric: fitness enthusiasts who push each other to stay healthy, volunteer EMTs who respond when emergencies strike, and everyday neighbors willing to give their time. By weaving these groups together, the race creates new bonds while supporting the ambulance service that keeps everyone safe.
Businesses can also join as sponsors, with their logos appearing on race shirts, the website, and promotional materials.
Registration is already open at runsignup.com, and those interested in volunteering or sponsoring can reach Goulart at 203-482-2529.
One town, one race, and countless ways to be part of something bigger than yourself.
