Hand-painted football field turf showing child emerging from flowers beneath Eiffel Tower

NFL Commissions Giant Art Murals for Paris Football Field

Mind Blown

The NFL is hand-painting supersized artworks onto football field turf, starting with a stunning mural beneath the Eiffel Tower. The league's new Color Field initiative bridges sports and fine arts while expanding to new global audiences.

Picture a child emerging from morning glory flowers, painted so large it covers an entire football field end zone beneath the Eiffel Tower.

That's exactly what's happening in Paris this week. The NFL commissioned artist Jammie Holmes to create a massive version of his painting "Untitled," which explores the fleeting nature of beauty and success, hand-painted onto strips of football turf.

The artwork flew from New York to Paris and will be rolled out on October 23 and 24 for NFL Experience Paris, a free event celebrating the league's first-ever regular season game in the City of Light. Thousands of fans will walk, play, and celebrate on a work of fine art.

This isn't a one-time stunt. The NFL's new Color Field initiative plans to feature different artists on football fields throughout the season, with the next installation scheduled for Art Basel Miami Beach in December.

The idea started during the pandemic when the league noticed something unexpected happening online. Fans were creating and sharing their own NFL-inspired artwork in droves, building an entire creative community around football.

"We started to think about ways in which we could celebrate those folks," says Ian Trombetta, the NFL's senior VP of global social and content. The league began showcasing fan art on its platforms, eventually launching Artist Replay in 2023, an annual exhibition featuring NFL-inspired artists.

The Ripple Effect

This season marks the NFL's most international lineup ever, with nine games across seven countries, including brand new markets in Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, and Paris. By connecting football with fine arts, the league is finding fresh ways to reach audiences who might never have considered themselves sports fans.

The initiative also creates meaningful opportunities for artists. Previous featured creators have included Calvin Clausell Jr., Kayla Mahaffey, and even Marco Wilson, a Carolina Panthers player who paints during his downtime.

Art and football might seem like an unlikely pairing, but both celebrate human achievement, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence. Now fans can literally stand on that connection.
