NFL Star Josh Allen Eyes 2028 Olympic Flag Football Team

America's best football players might soon trade their helmets for flags on the world's biggest stage.

Josh Allen, fresh off his 2024 NFL MVP season with the Buffalo Bills, told Fox News Digital he's interested in representing the United States in flag football when it debuts at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. "I've always thought it would be really cool to compete for my country," Allen said.

The quarterback knows he'd face a different challenge than Sunday games in Buffalo. After watching flag football on TV, Allen noticed the sport demands unique skills. "Those guys just kind of move different. Their hips are dipping a foot down and they're able to evade," he explained.

Allen joked about his own style being more about power than finesse. "I can throw with the best of them. But I'm better at usually running through people than spinning and getting around them."

Still, the chance to compete for gold holds special meaning. "We will see. I'd be very honored to do it," Allen said during an interview promoting his partnership with sleep aid brand Natrol.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell shared that many players have expressed similar interest. "I've had a lot of players that have said, 'We want to participate in that,'" Goodell told ESPN recently. "These players are competitors, and they love the big stage."

The league is backing up the enthusiasm with action. In May 2025, NFL owners reviewed a resolution allowing one player from each roster to compete in the 2028 Games. Teams would even get exemptions for international players representing their home countries.

The timing works perfectly too. Flag football is scheduled before training camps open, giving active NFL players a realistic window to participate. Goodell expects both current stars and recently retired legends to join the competition.
