The 25-year-old fiancée of Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin was attending her first game of the season after a medical crisis that nearly took her life. During a vacation in France last summer, Matovac experienced sudden and severe heart failure that required hours of continuous CPR to keep her alive.

"Without her receiving lifesaving CPR, the result would have been unimaginable," Dahlin wrote to fans in September. Medical teams performed CPR for up to two hours at a time, buying precious time until more help arrived.

Matovac spent weeks on life support in a French hospital before receiving a lifesaving heart transplant. After the surgery, she returned to her and Dahlin's native Sweden to recover, surrounded by family and medical care.

The journey became even more heartbreaking when Matovac revealed in January that she had been pregnant when her heart failed. She only went to the hospital initially because of concerns about her pregnancy, a decision that ultimately saved her life.

"Though you didn't get to experience this world, you played a vital role in ensuring that I could continue to be a part of it," she wrote on what would have been her due date.
